What does it mean to live in Leigh Park? What makes it home?
The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded Making Space and Leigh Park Community Association a grant of £50,000 for a two year project to explore and celebrate life on Leigh Park from its early development as a housing estate in the 1940s right up to the present day.
A programme of events and creative workshops aims to uncover the personal stories and experiences that will bring the history of the area to life. Residents and former residents of all ages are invited to get involved by sharing memories and photographs, researching the history of their local area and nominating local heroes. Groups will also work with craft artists, film makers and historians to create interactive memory boxes, a film and a new map of Leigh Park as a legacy for the future.
The project was launched at Leigh Park Community Centre on 28 November 2011 at an event attended by the Mayor of Havant, Councillor Ken Smith.
Watch out for our first big public events – a series of Memory Roadshows in different locations across Leigh Park in February and March 2012.
For further information about the project, including opportunities to join our team of volunteers, please contact Tracy Teasdale, part-time Community Heritage Worker, on 02392 472491 or heritage@makingspace.org.
