Making Space is delighted to once again be part of Hampshire Open Studios. We will be open for 6 days this year meaning more time than ever before to join us and explore our wonderful creative community at Making Space. We will be open from Saturday 22 - Thursday 27 August, 10am-3pm each day. There will be opportunities to visit our resident makers in their studios (including 3 new makers who have joined us in 2026). You can also browse our carefully curated Corridor Craft Shop and there's multiple opportunities as we'll be hosting multiple workshops as part of a Making Space Summer School!f

Our wonderful resident makers will all be in their studios over the weekend and on various days through the week. They will also be offering tasters / demos / experiences as part of the Open Studios event. Read on to find out more:

saturday 22 august

One-Day Kintsugi workshop with Richard Walker - 9am-4.30pm in the Craft Studio
In this workshop, you will explore contemporary Kintsugi techniques using your own broken items. You are welcome to bring a cracked, chipped, or shattered vessels to repair — or, if you prefer, you may intentionally break a piece during the class to experience the full transformation.

Chair Weaving Demonstration by Katy Bennett - 12.15-1pm in Studio 14
A chance to meet our newest resident maker as she demonstrates how she weaves the seats on Danish corded chairs.
Knotting Together Project Launch and 'first knots' with Dr Tara Goddard - from 1pm in Studio 17

Come and celebrate the launch of Knotting Together, an Arts Council England funded creative project. At this welcoming event Tara will introduce the project and visitors will have the opportunity to tie the first knots of a collaborative macrame artwork, and find out how to get involved. 
Textures in Watercolour demonstration with Sue Colyer - 2-3pm in Studio 15
Sue's artwork is an intuitive and emotional response to places rather than a realistic interpretation of a landscape. She is passionate about freedom of expression and emotional connections and in this demonstration she will show how she uses textures in her artwork.

sunday 23 august

Demonstration of techniques and sale of work by Jane Neville from 10am-3pm in the Jewellery Studio
Jane is a creator of fabric purses, note/sketchbooks and white and black porcelain jewellery & bowls who uses gold and copper leaf. She will have a variety of her work on display / for sale and is looking forward to chatting to visitors about her processes and how she makes her work.
Flat Back Case Binding Demonstration by Cameron Drawbridge at 12.15pm-1pm in Studio 12
Information: simple flat back case binding - focussing on the different steps in the process from sewing a text-block, creating a case with boards and decorative covering. The demonstration will be completed with the final assembly of these components into a finished book.
Material selection, preparation and soldering Demonstration by Helena Symes at 1pm in Studio 13
Helena will explain some of the Ideas and processes which inform her designs. She will be discussing the way she selects materials and the reasons for those choices. Helena will also explain and demonstrate some simple soldering techniques which she uses in her practice.
Signcoll demonstration by Richard Walker at 2pm in Studio 16
Signcoll is the latest innovative product from Instacoll. This unique product allows fine lines of pure gold to be added to art works, calligraphy and many more applications. This demonstration will allow you to see the process of applying gold to artworks in this fashion as well as having a go yourself!

*Please note demonstrations will take place in, or just outside the studios in our courtyard. Space will be limited, there is need to book but please bear this in mind.

wednesday 26 august

From inspiration to execution interactive talk by Sharon Justice at 12.15pm in Jewellery Studio
​Using expamples of work in development Sharon will share how she moved from inspiration to development in her design process. Take a look at examples of Sharon's work, moodboards and sketches and ask questions about her jewellery practice.

Across the Courtyard

​With over 20 years experience making and restoring jewellery, I design and handcraft beautiful, one-off and small batch pieces in my workshop – which used to be across my courtyard, hence the name, but is now nestled in my gorgeous garden.

Kelly is a ceramist and folk artist specialising in hand-built sculpture and ceremonial ceramics. ​A teacher, facilitator and storyteller with a passion for traditional crafts.

She has been working with and teaching ceramics for twenty years, in and around the Portsmouth area.

HELENA SYMES

Helena is a resident maker at Making Space who has a love of geometric forms, clean lines and colour. Her passion for recycling materials informs a lot of her current designs.  She works predominantly with recycled sterling silver, hand dyed aluminium and recycled cans.

Tara is a Macramé artist who creates handmade macramé bags, plant hangers & accessories. She is inspired by island textures and natural fibres.

JOSEPHINE BUTLER

Josephine is a botanical & life plaster caster. Her art is inspired by the beautiful nature and coastline of the south of England. Botanical & coastal plaster relief is an art form in which nature can be captured in time and preserved. Natures fragility and strength can be truly represented in this medium. Josephine enjoys colour, collaboration & community, along with sharing the joys of relief art with others.

LOUSIE PITT

Working from her studio in Southsea, Louise mainly makes and renovates stained glass, however she also has a passion for using up scrap glass and other reclaimed materials including ceramics, slate and plywood to make mosaics.

SHARON JUSTICE

Sharon is a designer/jeweller, working predominantly in silver, she uses diverse techniques ranging from forging, roller printing and etching to woven metals.  Often surface decoration, semi-precious stones, patination, and gold are used to accent her work.
